Pushing Away

I attended a great Men’s Retreat this weekend.  The worship was great, the speakers were interesting, the relationships that were fostered were fantastic.  So after it was all said and done and everyone was heading back to their homes one guy, who is a close friend, stopped me to talk for a moment.  Here’s the conversation:

Him: “Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for being a part of my life.  I really appreciate you.”

Me: “Seriously dude, save the tender moments for when you’re watching Lifetime with your wife.”

I know, I’m a jerk.  Why do I do this?  Why can’t I just accept a statement like that and say, “You’re Welcome”?  Why do I push people away who I really care about?

How do you respond to these conversations?
