Whatever You Do

In my journaling this morning I was struck by something that I have read many times before:

Colossians 3:23-24

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,  since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.

“Whatever you do”.  It’s so simple.  It doesn’t matter what you are doing.  Cleaning your house, working your job at the restaurant, delivering a package to a friend, serving in your community, whatever.  We do it all as a way to serve the Lord.  Because of this truth I need to whole-heartedly do everything that I set out to do and finish each project well.  If something is worth doing it is worth doing well.

It doesn’t matter if we ever get a “thank you” or a pat on the back from someone.  Our reward comes from Him and only Him.  Others may benefit and be impacted by what I do but it is Jesus who is my motivation for all that I do.  It is Jesus who I am serving.  In that light it doesn’t matter who notices what I do or if my work is ever recognized.    If I am only working for peoples gratitude I am missing the mark.  I need to always hold onto His purpose for my life knowing that it is His purpose that truly brings fulfillment in my life.

  1. This verse alone got me through my whole Freshman year at college. Something about it really helps keep you on track, and makes you strive for excellence. I played baseball in college, and I can remember chanting this verse in my mind as I was forced to run. The results, however, were great. I always ran better than I normally would, and I felt like I was worshiping even in the smallest areas.

    Thanks for the reminder.
